“During rush hour on Burford hill (a little Cotswold town on a steep hill), the clutch on our campervan packed in.
I was on my own in a broken-down van, and I became a very unpopular being. Traffic was at a halt. Cars and trucks revved angrily as they passed. I kept my head down and sorted recovery as quickly as I could.
After twenty minutes of backed-up traffic, a guy pulled up in his matte grey Audi. ‘Here we go,’ I thought. ‘He’s angry’.
He hopped out of the car, all smiles, bright blue eyes, and a build much like The Hulk.
“Reckon you can reverse it into that side road if I push?” he said.
Oh, I could. My mood lifted.
He stopped the traffic and single-handedly pushed the two-tonne camper off the road to clear the way. He told me he just wanted everyone else to be able to get on with their day.
What a legend.
One person is all it took to ensure the rest of Oxfordshire got to work and school.
Doesn’t this show how one of us could change the lives of others at any point just by offering a helping hand?
Thank you, Matthew. You made a horrible, disappointing morning into a much better day. For many people, probably.”
