It’s 2 years since I started Time for Kindness. Despite being a short time compared to other things I’ve worked on, it is already up there on the list of things I am most pleased to have done.
From the beginning my aim has been to highlight the kindness that I believe exists in the world. It is all too easy to get drawn into feeling overwhelmed and knocked down by all the negativity and bad things you see on the news and social media. Time for Kindness has never been about denying the negative, but we also need to remember that there are a lot of positive stories and actions too.
Positive response
Every time I tell people about Time for Kindness, share stories of kind acts or just talk generally about the importance of kindness, I get a positive reaction.
People tell me how much they love what I share.
They ask me to keep going.
They tell me it gives them a smile and reminds them to feel hopeful.
And you know what? That makes me feel good too!
In the 2 years since I began doing this, I have never run out of stories showing people being kind. And I don’t believe I ever will.
But we don’t talk enough about these things we do for each other. We don’t talk enough about them yet.
Celebrating a superpower
Sometimes people are shy about coming forward to share their examples. Particularly if they themselves have carried out the kind act.
They can feel embarrassed about talking about themselves or don’t want to ‘show off’. It’s also sometimes true that behaving that way comes so naturally to them, they don’t even realise how kind they are being. They think it’s ‘just what I do’.
I believe that kindness is a superpower. Often an under-recognised superpower. And it’s time to change that.
Recognise your kindness superheroes
I need your help.
Between now and the end of November, I’m calling on you to nominate people who have shown you kindness during 2022. Use the nomination form or send me a direct message telling me who they are and what they did.
Then during December we can end the year by celebrating these kindness ambassadors for the superheroes they are!
