Walrus and coral spotting allows you to volunteer in just a few minutes from home.

Mel, a woman with light skin tone and long blonde hair in a plait, wearing a wet suit, smiles broadly at the camera. She is stood on a small boat.

Melissa Hobson combines her volunteering with the passion she has for marine life, in line with her work as a marine science, conservation & sustainability writer. 2 of her volunteering projects are even things that she can do from her desk!

She takes part in WWF’s Walrus from Space (looking through satellite images online and logging if I see any walrus. Anyone can sign up and it’s actually kinda fun – Mel says she tends to spend a few minutes doing it here and there when she needs a brain break.).

She’s also started the Great Reef Census through which works similarly – anyone can get involved and you look through images of the reef to identify the types of coral and amount of coral cover pictured. You don’t need to be a coral expert – they do a little briefing at the start to get you up to speed.

Are you inspired to spend a few minutes of your day coral or walrus spotting?
