“I returned to Ely to buy a tall, slim chest of drawers that I had seen earlier in the week. Ely is one of those places with a traditional High Street and strange one way systems and really interesting and cool shops.
My chest of drawers shop is in the centre and being unfamiliar with the road layout, parked as close as I could get in a free public short stay car park.
I might have not considered the logistics of getting the chest of drawers to the car… the sales advisor did her best to advise how I could drive nearer, but I decided to try and carry it.
The seven drawers were removed and the unit assessed for weight… yes, it was doable! I paid, then off I went…
OMG… it was heavier than I anticipated… definitely bitten off more than I can chew here! But, I continued down the street, round the corner, people wisely giving me a wide berth… not a lot of choice really!!
A young man walking towards me, asked if I needed a hand. ‘No, no!’ I replied, doing my best to control breathing and speaking at the same time. The young man said he was only wandering around Ely as he didn’t have much going on today and again, offered to help. At this point I was struggling and he took the unit from me and asked where the car was.
We walked together, chatting… he wasn’t breaking a sweat or huffing and puffing! It transpired that he is waiting to hear about housing and hasn’t had the greatest of luck in life. Some people have been kind to him in the past and this was his way of paying it forward.
Even though I do not know his name, I want to express my thanks for his simple act of kindness which absolutely made my day.
Today has been a reminder that in this world of doom and gloom, there are good people who do not have an ulterior motive, but are genuinely kind.
Whoever you were, thank you and I hope life is better to you… you deserve a break…”
