“My dad worked hard his whole life to provide for our family. Over time, the physical strain of his job took a toll—leaving him in pain and with limited mobility. Now retired, he’s finally focusing on self-care, something he’d neglected for years. He recently started doing yoga at our local health and café centre and loves it.
Inspired by him, I decided to try a class there too. Afterward, I stopped by the café and asked if I could pay for his coffee in advance, so they could surprise him with it next time he came in. It wasn’t something they typically did, but they were happy to help. To make sure they gave it to the right person, they asked for his name.
When I said it, their faces lit up. “Oh, we know him! He’s just the kindest, loveliest man—like an adopted father to us.”
Hearing that filled me with pride. My dad, despite all his struggles, still managed to make others feel seen and special. It was the least I could do to return that love—by getting him a surprise coffee and making him feel cared for, too.”
