Cross cultural friendships show how we can live in peace.

Two women wearing blue gloves as they create something using paints. Karyn on the left has light skin tone and long grey hair. She is wearing a sleeveless blue top with a red heart on it. Alefiyah on the right has a medium light skin tone, her hair is covered with a white piece of clothing which comes down over her torso and arms, underneath which is a blue dress. Both are smiling broadly.

We love this story of kindness and long-term friendship from Karyn Ross.

Her friend Alefiyah is a teacher and Karyn recently helped her to set up her classroom at her new school. And even better, the new school’s theme for the year is ‘Kindness is your superpower’!

This was just the latest in decades of kindness. Karyn told us:

Alefiyah is the Secretary of The Love and Kindness Project Foundation and we have known each other since our daughters were in kindergarten and we were neighbours in an apartment complex.

Alefiyah’s family is Muslim and we are Jewish.

Our daughters grew up discussing the similarities between both faiths. We’ve gone to each other’s ceremonies: Serena’s Bat Mitzvah and Sarah’s Nikah. Alefiyah knew she could always count on me to make sure Sarah didn’t eat anything that wasn’t Halal because I understood the rules of Kashruth (Kosher).

Even with all the craziness going on in the world now, we keep our friendship strong. Kindness turns neighbours into lifelong friends…and neighbourhoods into communities where everyone can live in peace.
