A whole Somerset village showed kindness this summer – what kindness did you see during your holidays?
“Summer during the high holiday season must be a nightmare for the tiny quaint communities that have holiday lets. Tiny country lanes, parking is a premium and then the Grockles arrive!
My husband and I arrived at a lovely village in Somerset and would be joined by our daughter and family for the week. On arrival, we were advised of local fete and popped down. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. We were advised of places to visit and explore. Wonderful!
The cottage had one parking space. We asked a local lady if she could recommend a place where we could leave a second car. “Just leave it outside of my cottage” came the reply. Winner! We were very grateful.
Each day we met people who offered a few words of kindness and cheer.
We took part in the local pub’s quiz night. Everyone was jolly, lots of laughter and engaging conversation. Never in my life have we felt so welcome.
My 5 year old granddaughter wanted to spend her holiday pocket money and chose a packet of envelopes and box of brass split pins! The shop owner chatted with her about her excellent spending choice and everyone left with huge smiles. The little one presented the owner with a sticker she had made while on holiday to say thank you.
We have to mention the farmer who was spotted driving a tractor pulling a trailer loaded with a bright yellow digger who waved and tooted his horn for a VERY excited 3 year old who is crazy for such machines! It made his day!
So we want to say thank you to the staff at Bell Inn, local store, dog owners who let the grandkids feed their doggos treats, home owners who allowed us to use their parking and all the other amazing, friendly and hospitable people of Winsham village near Chard in Somerset who made our family week away so much more enjoyable and memorable.
Thank you to everyone! From Gail, Dewi, Jennifer, Charlie, Heidi & Alexander -the Grockles from the pub quiz.”
