“The other day, as we were winding down for the day, it was only me and one other team member left in The Biskery. We got talking about the never-ending juggle of work and kids (both huge privileges, not complaining!). Out of the blue, she expressed her gratitude for the flexibility we offer.
With our working hours ⏰.
With slowing production down during school holidays 🧒🏽.
With bringing kids to work if needed 👧🏻.
With swapping days 🗓️.
With attending parents’ evenings, school assemblies, appointments 🏫.
With championing part-time work ➗.
With finishing earlier, starting later, changing routines, if needed 🕑.
With empathy for why work sometimes has to wait 💕.
We get it. It was one of the things we wanted to do differently when we started hiring people. Have empathy, never judge, make life easier for working mums, not harder. She said no previous employer had been able to give her this level of flexibility and empathy. In her words it is “priceless.
She then said something that made me laugh: “Not even my mum could give me that!” She used to work in her mum’s restaurant. And not even her mum would give her this level of flexibility. It’s not always easy. But it’s worth it. And our team deserve it.”
Thank you to Lisa for sharing this wonderful story of how kindness can show up in the workplace. You can check out The Biskery’s website here.
