Laptops for Tanzanian school.

6 boys with dark skin tone and short black hair, sitting at wooden tables in a classroom. The walls are yellow and a window lets in bright light to the side of them. 3 of the boys are raising their hands.

“Do you have an old laptop or projector you or your business or school want to donate to a school in Tanzania?

This summer my family and I will be volunteering in a couple of schools in Northern Tanzania. We’ll be assisting teaching and helping as much as we can. One of the schools we are volunteering at is Suji High School where I worked as an English teacher in 1993.

Last week I asked the headmaster if there was anything we could do or bring that would really make a difference to the students’ education. He asked if we could help them build a computer department. They still use blackboards and chalk.

Suji has 400 students and currently there are only a couple of laptops available for the teachers, so teaching any type of computer skills is very challenging. He has asked if we can help find 50 laptops and 12 projectors, this will be enough so each classroom has one laptop and one projector and there will be enough laptops for one computer class.

The laptops don’t need to be modern, as long as they have 2gb of RAM and can run Linux Mint that would be a great start. For those non techie people reading this, if you have a big black laptop from ten years ago, it will most likely be fine. If the battery works, that is perfect but if not they can just plug them in.

So … if you or your business or your school have any old laptops or projectors please get in touch, you can DM me via LinkedIn. We can clean the hard drives and install the software.

In addition to the laptops and projectors we’d like to buy some spare projector bulbs and purchase any missing cables / spare parts etc so if you can’t donate any hardware, any donations would be massively appreciated.”

This post was shared by Richard Clarke over on LinkedIn and we thought it was an amazing example of kindness.

In the first week he had over 40 laptops promised, all from individuals, companies and schools that saw his post.

If you have something to donate, get in touch with Richard via LinkedIn.
