Kindness near Birks Bridge in the Lake District.

Birks Bridge, a picturesque stone bridge over a large stream. The bridge itself reflecting in the water along with the mossy stone and odd trees alongside it.

“My husband and I live near Cambridge and our daughter Grace is at Nottingham Uni. She is a member of the mountaineering society. She drove to the Lake District to climb a hill. The next morning she drove a friend to Birks Bridge and parked ready to go walking. When they returned she found she had a flat tyre.

They flagged down a car who kindly took them back to their hostel hut. Grace had intermittent signal at the hut and she was able to contact us and explain the situation.

By this time it was dark and we didn’t want her to go back to the car. We decided to call recovery the next morning as she had no spare wheel. She rang at 8am and the earliest they could get there would be 13.30, but it could be as late as 16.15.

We were very worried about this as she would be a lone 20 year old female in a deserted area with no phone signal. She had to return to the car alone as her friend had to lead a group. We were 5 and a half hours away and there was nothing we could do.

We were in contact with recovery and at one point they said it had moved to 19.00. I was literally beside myself. I rang the police, but was then informed that recovery would be there by 16.20.

It wasn’t until Grace was safe in arms of my brother in Derby that I heard about the couple in a car park near Birks Bridge. They had been worried about her, stayed with her and had provided cups of tea and company over the day.

When the recovery driver did appear at 16.20 he told Grace that he had just been flagged down by a couple who wanted to make sure that he was attending a young girl called Grace in a black Corsa. I can’t thank this unknown couple enough for looking after our little girl when we couldn’t. I would love to be able to thank them, but I have no idea who they are.”
