Day 7 – Help out

This week my year 9 daughter and a couple of her friends helped out at an inter-schools football competition for younger kids. They were originally asked to get involved to help keep score.

But it turned out that one of the schools didn’t have a PE teacher to help them. So K was appointed as their manager.

When I asked her how she’d got on, she said ‘Well, we lost most of the games, but we did draw one of them!’

It turned out that her whole interaction with this team of younger girls was about encouraging them. She congratulated them for what they did do (gave it a go and had fun) rather than what they didn’t do (win!) She said she made extra sure to praise the goalkeeper, to recognise the saves she made rather than the goals she let in.

I’m going to hazard a guess that those girls will remember the kindness that the older girl showed them for longer than they will remember the result of the matches!
