Be nice or be kind?

While on holiday, Emma spotted this wonderful public announcement at the Keukenhof gardens in Amsterdam. We love the positivity of the message. We also think it’s a handy opportunity to remind you of our thoughts on the difference between nice and kind. Both have their place, but they’re not the same thing.

Here at Time for Kindness we believe that kindness isn’t the same as “being nice” – sometimes the kind thing is the hard thing. Whether that’s holding people accountable, having difficult conversations, or something else.

Graham Alcott explains this really well in his book, “’Nice is about telling people what they want to hear. Kind is about telling people what they need to hear.”
