Anecdote demonstrates research findings that toddlers naturally kind.

A toddler with light skin tone and blonde curly hair holds out a flower to the camera.

“Today I had bad hay fever which made my chest bad. I was trying to pat myself on the back and reassured my 1 year old that I was ok and that I would get her dad to help me in a minute. She immediately came to help pat me on the back.”

Fascinatingly, there is science to back this up now too as research published by The Royal Society found “that young children are impartial in where their compassion is directed—being similarly willing to help in-groups and out-groups, as well as humans and puppets.” Interestingly they also discovered “behavioural evidence of guilt or shame associated with not helping.”

So thank you Tilda for sharing this person story which so beautifully demonstrates the evidence about the kindness of toddlers!
