Dealing with lawyers is often very stressful for a lot of reasons so we love this story of how kind a lawyer is being and the difference it’s making to the client.
“I’m having to use a lawyer, that was enacted on behalf of me by my union. I developed mental health impacts after an incident in the workplace. So far I’ve been impressed with their understanding and levels of kindness and compassion they have shown me.
In setting up the appointments, they have allowed me to email them to set them up. Telephone calls trigger me. They asked if I’d prefer to do it via a web call, or via telephone. The decision was mine. That helped immediately. I had autonomy again, and they understood my barriers and limitations.
I told them I understood I may need discuss the incident and that the therapist has informed me this will likely be traumatic for me, and I asked if my partner could be present to support me. They responded that this was understandable, and that I could leave the call or have time if I needed it at any time. I got informed that I did not need to put my camera on at all which was a huge relief.
Having to ask for assistance is still hard for me, and I’m glad they gave this information freely to assist me. They also informed me that a man would be present on the call if I consented, and that he would be there in a note taking capacity only, and that if I preferred he was not present that was okay, just let them know. Such a relief to me, to know that this was considered too by them, to not only let me know this but what the person would be doing. This would likely have worried me if given this information in the moment.
I therefore felt comfortable accepting the male note taker, and also requesting a morning appointment, stating that if it was midday onwards that this would leave more time for me to ruminate and worry over the call, so one has been set up for 10am. Time enough for me to get up, and prep for the call and go right into it.
Their kindness and understanding is helping make this whole situation less stressful for me. I’m so grateful.”
